Kenya: U.N.-Habitat chief explains reason for choosing Nairobi as headquarters location
Anaclaudia Rossbach, executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), cited Nairobi as the ideal headquarters location given the city's exemplary demonstration of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Formerly known as the U.N. Center for Human Settlements and established in 1978, the U.N.-Habitat is mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable urban areas and cities, with the goal of ensuring adequate shelter for all. The organization also works to drive economic growth and social development while reducing poverty and inequality through its support for urban development and planning. In 2001, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution upgrading the center to the U.N.-Habitat. Nairobi demonstrates remarkable harmony between diverse elements. For instance, in its national park, animals coexist peacefully while the city skyline emerges in the distance, painting a perfect portrait of human-nature coexistence.
