PEOPLE CARRYING ISRAELI FLAGSBERLIN, GERMANY - JULY 19: German police detained numerous protesters as hundreds rallied at Berlin's Breitscheidplatz on Saturday, July 19, in a pro-Palestinian demonstration condemning what they called Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags as well as signs that read: “Stop starving Gaza,” “One genocide does not justify another,” “Your silence is killing,” and “Israel has recently committed the largest child massacre in history.” Protesters criticized the German government for supplying weapons to Israel, and chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine,” “Gaza,” “Terrorist Israel,” “Child-killer Israel,” and “Hands off Syria and Gaza.” Some participants highlighted the hunger in Gaza by symbolically carrying bread, empty flour sacks, and cooking pots. Police maintained a heavy security presence during and after the protest detained a large number of individuals. Meanwhile, a pro-Israel group attempted to provoke the protest by waving Israeli flags near the demonstration site. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, killing nearly 59,000 Palestinians so far, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages and spread of disease. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
