American tourist, 35, falls to his death from hotel balcony in Thailand
An American tourist fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Thailand while he was on holiday with his girlfriend.
Justin Todd Henry, 35, reportedly drank beer and smoked cannabis before plunging from the 10th floor of the Astra Condo in Chiang Mai on July 18.
Neighbours said they heard Justin and his Ukrainian girlfriend in their room before he was found dead on the pavement outside the condo at around 10 pm. Officers are investigating whether they were arguing before the fall.
Police arrived to find the holidaymaker from Maine lying face-up on the street. He suffered multiple fractures and was believed to have died instantly on impact.
His distraught girlfriend, 26, was nearby sobbing before fainting from shock.
Police Colonel Pratchya Thitsala, superintendent of the Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, said: 'On July 18, at around 10:00 pm, the duty officer at Mueang Chiang Mai station received a report from the Nakornping Radio Center that a foreign national had fallen from a height.
'The officers went to the scene and found a foreign man who had fallen from the 10th floor of Astra Condo. He was lying on his back near the side entrance of the building with a visibly broken leg. He died at the scene.
'For this case, we can rule out the involvement of a third party. We checked the security cameras, and they showed that he was with his girlfriend. Only the two of them entered the room together.
'His girlfriend is around 26 years old and is a Ukrainian national. She was in a state of extreme shock, with weakness in her limbs. She was taken to Suan Dok Hospital. We will wait for her condition to improve before conducting an interview.
'The man who died was an American citizen named Justin Todd Henry, 35 years old.
'There were no signs of a struggle. We found cannabis in the room, and both of them had used it. Sometimes when people consume too much, they become dazed or disoriented and that might have led to the fall.
'They could have been in drunken state before, but when something this serious happens, everyone can be sobered, and she was.
'There were no signs of struggle at the scene. From our initial investigation, it appears he fell by accident.
'We are not sure yet whether there was any argument between them. We will have to wait for the girlfriend to recover before interrogating her about this.'
Locals said Justin was earlier seen buying beer from a convenience store before returning to his room. They added they heard a shouting shortly before he fell to his death.
Rescue volunteer Thanakorn Wongnang said: ‘We found his girlfriend crying so hard that she fainted multiple times, so our team had to give her first aid and comfort her. From what she told us, they were in a relationship and had come to Thailand on vacation. They planned to get married after going back to their country.'
Justin's brother, Ryan Liam Henry, paid tribute to the young man.
He said: 'I love you so much, bro. I'm still in disbelief that you're gone — it doesn't feel real. Our trip to Portugal will forever be one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. I replay those memories all the time, and I'll never stop cherishing them. I wish I could give you one more hug, hear your laugh again, and tell you just how much you mean to me.
'You'll always be with me, in everything I do. I promise to honor your memory every day and keep your spirit alive through the love you gave so freely. Until we meet again… I miss you more than words can say.'
Kristen Green Fox added: We've lost an amazing school friend. I'm honestly still trying to wrap my head around it. He was one of those rare souls who could light up a room with his presence.
'He was always kind, always funny, always there with a quick joke or a warm word when you needed it. He always made us laugh and lifted us up.'
Justin's death is among the latest in a string of fatalities involving falls from hotels in Thailand this year.
On July 19, an allegedly drunk Russian tourist fell to his death from the roof of a pool villa on holiday island Phuket.
While on July 2, Austrian guest Mario Frey, 45, died in a drunken fall from the steps of his resort hotel in Surat Thani.
On June 4, British tourist Kerry Bruce, 58, lost her balance and tumbled off the edge of an unprotected walkway while walking up to her room in Phuket.
