Mother and son saved by rescue team after car plunges into canal
A mother and son were saved by rescue teams after their car plunged into a canal during a storm.
Jureeporn Sukyodphanao, 45, was driving with her son Rapheepon Namjai, 24, when her pickup truck lost control on the wet road in Trat, southern Thailand.
Dramatic dashcam footage shows the Toyota Revo pickup truck skidding on the pavement before veering into a roadside ditch. The vehicle flipped over and was half-submerged in water.
Emergency crews were alerted to the horror crash on July 17 at 7:30 am local time. They found the pickup upside down with the mother and son still inside.
Jureeporn suffered only minor injuries, but her son had temporarily stopped breathing after drowning. Paramedics were able to revive him with CPR, and the pair were rushed to the Khao Saming Hospital for further treatment.
An onlooker said: 'The truck lost control after it drove over a large puddle on the road. No other drivers were hurt because it swerved onto the roadside.'
Authorities said Jureeporn and Rapheepon are recovering and are now out of danger.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
