City employee goes to work in flip-flops for two years just to clock in and leave
A city employee in Brazil reportedly turned up to work in flip-flops and shorts for two years, clocking in only to leave shortly afterwards.
The suspect was finally caught after colleagues began to suspect something was amiss when he showed up to the office every day in shorts and slippers.
CCTV footage from City Hall in Ponta Grossa, Parana, reveals Luciano Gaspar Daru, 56, entering the building and leaving one minute and 15 seconds after clocking in.
The video clip was recorded on March 14, but investigators say this had been going on for two years.
The worker, a career public servant for 26 years earning BRL 2,300 (GBP 307) per month, is now being investigated for defrauding the city.
Since 2023, he has been an administrative technician at the Municipal Finance Department, working from noon to 6 pm, local media cited official documents as saying.
However, the video clearly shows him leaving the building less than two minutes after arriving.
In 2024, after his coworkers noticed his relaxed attire, concerns were raised, and police began an investigation.
Police chief Derick de Moura Jorge announced on Tuesday, July 15, that Daru had been indicted for inserting false data into public administration computer systems to obtain undue advantages.
The sentence is two to 12 years in prison, plus a fine.
Police said: 'During his interrogation, the investigated party confessed to the irregular practice, having stated that during the period between August 2023 and June 2025, he only recorded the time clock without carrying out his activities.
'The employee continued to receive his full remuneration during the entire period in which he did not perform his duties, constituting a direct loss to the municipal public coffers.'
Investigators estimate the amount to be to the tune of BRL 33,000 (GBP 4,395).
