UK: Crowds Cheer 'Terror' Suspects As Arrests Soar Over Palestine Protest Signs In London
London, United Kingdom - July 19, 2025 Nearly 100 more people were arrested across the UK on July 19 under the Terrorism Act 2000 for displaying signs stating, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” This brings the total number of such arrests to around 200 since Palestine Action was designated a terrorist organization on July 5. Reactions varied across locations. Police in Edinburgh, Derry, and outside the British Embassy in The Hague allowed protests to proceed peacefully. But in other cities, enforcement was strict. The Met Police detained 55 people in Parliament Square, while Bristol saw 17 arrests, Manchester 16, and Truro 8. Public applause greeted those arrested in Truro, including 81-year-old former magistrate Deborah Hinton. The designation followed an incident where Palestine Action supporters entered RAF Brize Norton and spray-painted two planes. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper ordered the ban amid lobbying from arms firms and think tanks. Despite arrests, sign-holding continues across the UK in cities like London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Derry, and Truro. Protesters include teachers, doctors, scientists, and figures from historic movements, such as civil rights activists Eamon McCann and Kate Nash. In The Hague, crowds rallied outside the British Embassy to protest the UK’s human rights record. A legal challenge to the ban will be heard at the High Court on July 21, where Huda Ammori seeks permission for a judicial review. Protesters plan a major demonstration on August 9, with over 500 people expected to participate. Arrests now total nearly 200 in the UK and 280 globally, including 80 in The Hague. Fourteen home raids have occurred in Cardiff, Leeds, and Bradford. Defend Our Juries has urged the police to investigate government actions rather than peaceful protesters.
