Passengers delayed at Hong Kong airport amid typhoon onslaught
Passengers were delayed at Hong Kong airport amid the impact of Typhoon Wipha.
Footage shows stranded travellers remaining at the airport after authorities cancelled numerous flights due to the severe weather caused by the storm on Sunday, July 20.
The filmer said: 'Hong Kong is about to become a refugee camp.'
The Airport Authority confirmed that Hong Kong International Airport will operate 1,076 flights on Monday as it works to clear the backlog caused by the storm.
Steven Yiu, executive director for airport operations, said on Monday: 'We are confident that stranded travellers affected by the typhoon will basically be handled by tomorrow.'
More than 500 flights were cancelled on Sunday, impacting approximately 100,000 passengers.
The Hong Kong Observatory raised the T10 storm signal at 9:20 am on Sunday, the first time the highest storm warning has been issued since September 2023.
In neighbouring Vietnam, a tourist boat was capsized by the storm, leaving dozens of passengers dead on Saturday. The vessel reportedly overturned after being hit by choppy waves and heavy rain off the coast of Ha Long Bay shortly after 2 pm local time.
Wipha has been downgraded to a tropical storm after hitting mainland China on July 20.
