Sea Lion ‘Pointer’ Rescued From Roadway in San Rafael
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A juvenile sea lion nicknamed “Pointer” was safely rescued Saturday morning after wandering into traffic along Point San Pedro Road, prompting swift action from first responders and the community.
The San Rafael Police Department began receiving calls about the unexpected marine visitor navigating the roadway. Officers, joined by personnel from the San Rafael Fire Department, quickly responded to the scene to ensure public safety and assist the animal. Working together with bystanders, responders used shields, a litter basket, and cardboard to gently guide the sea lion away from traffic and toward Point San Pedro Bay Park.
Once at the park, Pointer cooled off under the sprinklers until crews from The Marine Mammal Center arrived. The organization took custody of the sea lion, who is believed to be suffering from a bacterial infection. Officials say the animal will be treated and, once recovered, released back into the wild.
Authorities thanked community members for promptly reporting the sighting and keeping a safe distance. They reminded the public that wild animals, even when appearing calm or friendly, can be unpredictable and should only be handled by professionals.
