Shop awning collapses injuring woman as typhoon lashes Thailand
This is the dramatic moment a shop awning collapsed injuring a woman during a typhoon in Thailand.
CCTV footage shows the structure being battered by powerful gusts due to Typhoon Wipha before falling to the ground while staff were clearing tables outside the restaurant in Chanthaburi on Monday.
Workers and customers screamed as they fled into the building. However, store owner Manee Nilacha was injured after being struck on her back by the heavy metal roof.
Rescue volunteers and soldiers arrived at the scene to rush the wounded Manee to a hospital and clear the debris.
An officer said: 'Fortunately, there were no fatalities, only injuries. The relevant agencies are finding ways to provide assistance in line with official protocols.'
Jeeraya Homsiri, a staff member of the Jin Khao Man Gai Singapore restaurant, said: ‘At first, it was raining lightly while customers were dining both inside and outside the shop. Suddenly, the rain intensified, so they moved inside.
‘Then, there was a gust which caused the awning to collapse. Fortunately, there were not many customers outside, and the damage was mostly to the shop exterior.
‘I did not expect something like this would happen. We previously received a warning message about the storm, but I did not expect this to happen to our shop.'
The provincial Disaster Mitigation and Prevention Office said it has established a command centre to monitor the typhoon and organise rapid response teams.
Emergency shelters were also prepared in case of evacuations, authorities said.
Residents were urged to be vigilant of flash floods and landslides, especially those living near canals and mountains.
Typhoon Wipha has been pounding Thailand with strong winds and torrential downpours.
The Thai Meteorological Department on Monday predicted more heavy rain and high seas until July 24. It added around half of Thailand will be battered with increased rainfall due to the typhoon, which made landfall in China's southern Guangdong province on July 20.
Wipha has been been downgraded to a tropical storm after hitting mainland China.
