On the evening of July 23, a humanoid robot dressed in traffic police uniform made an appearance at an intersection on East Nanjing Road in Huangpu District, Shanghai, drawing a crowd of onlookers.

Named Xiao Hu, the humanoid traffic robot took over four years to develop, train, and prepare for deployment.

While on duty, Xiao Hu issues voice prompts to pedestrians such as, “Red light, please stop,” and uses standard traffic police hand signals to direct foot traffic across the road.

Equipped with strong learning and imitation abilities, Xiao Hu can not only manage road traffic but also provide directions and answer questions related to traffic laws.

According to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau’s Traffic Management Department, the robot represents a new technological approach to traffic control and has not yet been officially deployed. Its appearance was part of a real-world learning exercise for traffic management scenarios.
