China: Blistering summer temperatures heat up demand for ice in China
Storyline: Blistering summer temperatures heat up demand for ice in China [Voice_over] Ice factories in China are running at full capacity to meet demand, fueled by intense summer heat. At an ice making factory in central China's Henan Province, workers slide three foot ice slabs onto trucks, some of which are destined for produce markets, logistics parks or factories. The ice-making production manager said sales have recently doubled. [Sound_bite] Liu Xianfu, production manager, ice factory: "Our workers began to load ice cubes onto trucks at 5 a.m. and work until 8 p.m. Our factory can produce about 300 tons of ice cubes per day, but even that fails to meet the customer demand." [Voice_over] Beyond their typical clients, hotels and tourist destinations are also ordering blocks of ice. These with flowers and fruit, frozen in the middle, will be used as decorations or for games. [Sound_bite] Du Zhiguo, staff from tourist spot: "As a tourist spot, we hold various activities like ice-smashing games every week to attract tourists." [Voice_over] The manager of another ice factory in Henan said new products like high-transparency ice slabs and fruit-infused ice cubes account for one third of their total sales.
