Soldiers rescued stranded residents as flash floods spawned by Typhoon Wipha submerged roads and homes in northern Thailand.

Footage shows the muddy deluge surging through a neighbourhood as heavy rain battered Nan province today, July 23.

The municipal government earlier issued heavy rainfall alerts across seven districts, warning of severe flooding and landslides.

Nan Governor Chainarong Wongyai said on Tuesday that between 200 and 500 millimetres of rainfall were forecast to fall today.

Disaster response teams were dispatched to monitor the situation and build flood barriers in high-risk areas.

Provincial authorities said they had set up a 'war room' for round-the-clock monitoring of the weather until July 26.

Typhoon Wipha has been pounding Thailand with strong winds and torrential downpours.

The Thai Meteorological Department on Monday predicted more heavy rain and high seas until July 24. It added around half of Thailand will be battered with increased rainfall due to the typhoon, which made landfall in China's southern Guangdong province on July 20.

Wipha has been downgraded to a tropical storm after hitting mainland China.
