MATTIAS GARDELL, LECTURER OF DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY OF RELIGIONS AT UPPSALA UNIVERSITY SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Swedish) STOCKHOLM, SWDEN - JULY 26: Hundreds of people held a protest in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, on Saturday, July 26, accusing the government of remaining silent over Israel's occupation of Gaza. Gathering at Odenplan Square at the call of numerous civil society organizations, the protesters called on the Swedish government to take immediate action to stop the war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza. During the protest, which expressed that the government has remained silent against Israel's occupation in Gaza, banners reading "Children are being killed in Gaza," "Schools and hospitals are being bombed," and "End the food shortage" were carried. Chanting slogans such as "Freedom for Palestine, no to the Netanyahu and Trump plan," the demonstrators later marched to the front of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Professor Dr. Mattias Gardell, a faculty member in the Department of History of Religions at Uppsala University, told Anadolu reporter that Israel is committing ethnic cleansing. Criticizing the Swedish government's silence in the face of Israel's stance, Gardell said, that the protesters are gathered to pressure the Swedish government to act according to the principles of liberal democracy based on the Swedish Constitution and to contribute to stopping the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Sweden must break its silence and take action now. Gardell stated that Israel is continuing genocide in Gaza, using hunger as a weapon, and setting deadly traps around humanitarian aid stations, and added that Israel, which continues genocide in Gaza, uses hunger as a weapon, prepares deadly traps, and sets these traps around humanitarian aid stations, also continues its occupation in the West Bank. For these terrible reasons, the Swedish government must pressure the far-right Israeli government. What is being witnessed now is full-scale ethnic cleansing progressing toward a massive genocide. The Swedish academician stressed that stopping Israeli attacks is in their hands because our politicians are not acting according to democratic principles as they claim; if they did, Israel could not commit this genocide. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued genocide in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 59,800 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
