VARIOUS OF THICK CLOUDS PASSING OVER SKYSCRAPERS IN MANHATTAN NEW YORK CITY, US - JULY 25: Extreme heat and severe thunderstorms struck New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area on Saturday, July 26, bringing flash floods and record-breaking temperatures as a heat dome lingered over the region. Real-feel temperatures exceeded 100°F (38°C), triggering heat advisories and putting pressure on the city’s power infrastructure. The extreme weather also caused significant travel disruptions, with hundreds of flight delays and cancellations at major airports. The region experienced historic highs on Friday, with Newark reaching 100°F (38°C) and LaGuardia Airport hitting 99°F (37°C), both breaking previous records. The intense heat continued into Saturday before strong thunderstorms brought temporary relief—though with new risks of flooding. New York’s three major airports—JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark—reported over 300 delays each, with nearly 90 flights canceled at LaGuardia alone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops along the East Coast due to thunderstorms, exacerbating travel delays. In New York, emergency services warned residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Writing by Sibel Uygun
