KRIONERI, GREECE - JULY 26: Wildfires erupted in multiple regions of Greece on Saturday, July 26, fueled by extreme heat, dry conditions, and strong winds, forcing evacuations and causing significant damage.
Fires broke out in the Attica Region, including the Krioneri and Parnitha districts near Athens, as well as on Evia Island, Chios Island, and in Messinia province on the Peloponnese Peninsula. Firefighting teams are battling the flames on the ground and from the air, with aircraft deployed to contain the spread.
In the northern Athens suburb of Kryoneri, residents were ordered to evacuate after receiving emergency SMS alerts.
According to Greek daily Katimerini, Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis confirmed that three evacuation messages were sent to residents in the area, located about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northeast of the capital.
Greek media reported houses engulfed in flames, and officials acknowledged property damage, though a full assessment will be made once the fires are under control.
A total of 145 firefighters, 44 fire engines, 10 planes, and seven helicopters are working to extinguish the blaze in Kryoneri, whose cause remains unknown. At least five residents, mostly elderly with respiratory issues, have been treated by emergency medical teams.
Temperatures exceeding 38°C (100°F), combined with dry vegetation and strong winds, have intensified the wildfires. The Fire Service is simultaneously managing four other major fires in southwestern Greece, on the islands of Crete, Evia, and Kythera.
