On Saturday, July 26, thousands gathered near Sudstern metro station in the Kreuzberg district to protest Israel's genocidal war and to draw attention to the hunger crisis in Gaza.
The demonstrators then marched, chanting pro-Palestinian slogans and carrying placards with anti-Israel messages. Many residents along the route showed support by appearing at their windows.
Clashes between protesters and police broke out at several points during the march.
As the demonstrators approached Kottbusser Tor metro station, police intervened forcefully, detaining many and causing injuries.
In an announcement, police claimed the protest posed a “threat to public safety,” ordered it to end, and did not allow the march to continue.
Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 59,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
