Dramatic footage captured by eyewitness Mark Tsurkis shows the intense moments after an American Airlines flight aborted takeoff due to a landing gear malfunction that triggered fire and smoke on the runway at Denver International Airport.
Flight AA-3023, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 bound for Miami, was speeding up for takeoff around 2:45 p.m. local time on Saturday when, according to Tsurkis, "After about 30 seconds, we heard a loud boom. I knew something happened — the captain started slowing down right away. It seems like a front left landing gear tire blew up, and we saw another wheel come off and pass us on the left."
As the plane decelerated, fire broke out near the landing gear, prompting an emergency evacuation order. Tsurkis described the moment as unfolding "quickly," with passengers sliding down the emergency chutes as thick smoke filled the area.
All 173 passengers and crew safely evacuated the aircraft. Five people were evaluated on the scene, and one was transported to a hospital with a minor injury, according to Denver Airport authorities.
The Denver Fire Department extinguished the fire by 5:10 p.m. American Airlines said the aircraft experienced a maintenance issue with a tire and has since been removed from service for inspection.
The FAA confirmed it is investigating the incident, which temporarily disrupted operations on the runway but did not cause broader delays at the airport.
