Butterflies eating from monkey poo.
Butterflies do eat animal poo (also called scat or dung), and there’s a good reason for it!
While we often picture butterflies delicately sipping nectar from flowers, they also need minerals, salts, and amino acids that nectar doesn’t provide. Animal dung, along with other sources like rotting fruit, carrion, and mud puddles, contains these vital nutrients.
This behavior is called “puddling.” Male butterflies are especially known for it, as they need those extra nutrients to increase their reproductive success. They pass some of these nutrients to females during mating, which helps ensure healthy offspring.
