Tourists from across the globe are swarming into East Africa to witness the great wildlife migration as millions of wildebeest and zebras have commenced their journey from Tanzania to Kenya in search of food and water since July. Prices of many travel items such as air tickets and hotels have reached their peak of the year. The Serengeti National Park, a World Heritage site located in northern Tanzania, is renowned for the massive annual migration of wildebeest and zebras. Many hotels nearby have been reserved months or even half a year before, and air tickets to Tanzania are also hard to get. "We're here in Tanzania mainly because we love nature very much, and we want to see the migration of wild animals. We attach great importance to the current experience," said Chinese tourists. "It's really spectacular to see so many wildebeest. I'm beyond words, deeply moved," said another Chinese tourist. At present, African countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Mauritius are actively attracting Chinese tourists through various means. "China is producing the biggest number of what we call outbound travelers. So it is an important market for us in Tanzania. In 2024, we received almost 70,000 tourists from China market alone. And if you look at the difference between 2023 and 2024, the difference is significant, because in 2023, we received somewhere slightly above 45,000," said Ernest Mwamwaja, marketing director of Tanzania Tourist Board. The migration is an annual movement of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores from Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya, primarily between July and October.
