Locals were heartbroken to see ancient olive trees reduced to ashes by a wildfire in Cyprus.

Footage shows flames engulfing trees on the hills of Galataria, Paphos, as the blaze swept through the area on July 7.

The devastating fire razed groves believed to be hundreds of years old, along with younger trees.

Vineyards and wild vegetation were also consumed by the fast-moving inferno.

Resident Marios Vryoni said: ‘Centuries-old Cypriot olive trees in Galataria, Paphos. A symbol of culture and sustainable agriculture.'

The historic trees are estimated to be between 500 and 1,000 years old, dating back to ancient Greek and Roman times.
