Tesco staff stop alleged thief - police use pepper spray to subdue him
This is the moment Tesco staff and security stopped a suspected thief from fleeing before police arrived and used pepper spray to subdue him.
The incident unfolded around 8:20pm on Tuesday 22 July at the Tesco Extra near Swansea train station in Wales.
Witness Daniel Mitchell, 29, said the man tried to walk out with stolen goods but was stopped by security.
Cornered, the suspect began smashing bottles inside the store, Daniel said.
Staff quickly blocked the exits to prevent him from fleeing.
A video shows an officer aiming a Taser, then holstering it before using pepper spray to bring the man down.
Daniel, from Coventry, Leicestershire, said: "I was standing outside the station and saw a commotion."
"I"
then realised what Tesco staff were doing.
"It was clever really. "
"They were calm and just made sure he couldn't leave. "
"No one seemed scared, just watching."
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "Officers attended Tesco Express, High Street, Swansea, shortly after 8:30pm on Tuesday July 22 following a report of a man causing criminal damage within the store."
"44-year-old Adam Griffiths, from Penlan, Swansea, was arrested and has since been charged with criminal damage."
"Griffiths pleaded guilty to the offence and has been sentenced to four weeks in prison."
