León, Spain - July 26, 2025 The bear cub Alba has been relocated to the brown bear acclimation facility in Valsemana, León, where she will prepare for life back in the wild. Now weighing between 25 and 30 kilograms, Alba arrived Thursday morning at this specially designed enclosure that keeps bears isolated from humans while they learn to thrive in natural surroundings. Rescued in mid-April in Teverga, Asturias, after it was clear she could not safely reunite with her mother, Alba first received veterinary care in Oviedo. She then moved to the Wildlife Recovery Center in Villaescusa, Cantabria, where she stayed until today. Alba will spend about one to two months in Valsemana, where the environment and video monitoring help bears adapt before full release. This facility has successfully prepared six cubs since 2019, including Saba, Éndriga, Martín, Cova, and Barniedo. This collaborative effort between Asturias, Cantabria, and Castilla y León has strengthened the Cantabrian brown bear population. In 2024, the birth of a cub from Saba was confirmed in Asturias, highlighting the success of these conservation efforts.
