Heroic villagers brave raging floodwater to rescue stranded boy in China
On July 6, a dramatic rescue took place in Honghe County, part of the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. A 13-year-old first-year middle school student named Li Tao slipped into the fast-flowing Menglong River while washing off mud near the riverbank.
He was swept about 200 to 300 metres downstream and ended up stranded on a large rock in the middle of the river. His companions quickly sought help from nearby villagers.
Five villagers from Menglong Village in Yisa Town, including Hei Jianhua, rushed to the scene with rescue tools such as ropes, bamboo poles, and ladders. Due to the rapid current, their initial plan to have the boy tie a rope around himself and self-rescue was abandoned. Instead, they decided that a strong swimmer would attempt the rescue using a secured bamboo pole.
During the rescue, the bamboo pole was repeatedly swept away by the current, but the five villagers eventually managed to hold it firmly in place. Taking advantage of the moment, Hei Jianhua carefully approached the stranded boy and successfully brought him back to shore. The entire rescue operation lasted about 30 minutes.
