A Thai gunman killed five people then shot himself in a rampage that was revenge for his car being scratched six years ago, his wife caid.

Noi Praidaen, 61, opened fire on security guards at the Tor Kor Market in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok on Monday.

He killed four guards and a female vendor before walking towards a bench and turning the gun on himself.

CCTV footage shows the shooter striding across the street in the area near the Chatuchak Weekend Market, frequented by tourists.

Police Lieutenant General Sayam Boonsom, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the gun attack stemmed from a years-long dispute between Noi and the guards.

He said: 'His wife believed that the motive stemmed from a long-standing personal conflict with a group of security officers after his car was scratched in 2019 to 2020.

‘He had a deep affection and protectiveness toward his vehicle, and also had a violent temper, which led to him accumulating resentment over the years.

‘He regularly vented about this unresolved issue because he had previously filed a complaint but saw no progress in finding the perpetrator, and he had also consumed alcohol before the incident.'

Noi was said to have held a taxi driver at gunpoint to take him to the market.

He was seen wearing a black T-shirt, camouflage shorts, a cap, and a rucksack, before carrying out the attack at a collection point for donations for residents evacuated from the clashes along the border with Cambodia.

He reportedly killed his former colleagues with a CZ Shadow II handgun before being seen walking through a car park toward his wife's stall. He then sat on a nearby bench and took his own life.

Authorities emphasised that the rampage was unrelated to the ongoing conflict with Cambodia, dismissing online claims linking it to terrorism.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market is open to visitors from Friday to Sunday. Traders work during the week.

Thailand has one of the highest gun ownership and gun homicide rates among Southeast Asian nations.

Though Thai authorities have vowed to tighten gun control, there are around 4 million unregistered guns, often smuggled from war-torn countries, in circulation, the Ministry of Interior said in 2023.
