Soldiers rescue flood victims from Typhoon Wipha aftermath
Soldiers rescued hundreds of flood-stricken residents after Typhoon Wipha battered northern Thailand.
Footage shows the officers helping villagers cross waist-deep floods surging through a neighbourhood in Chiang Rai.
Twenty troops from the Armed Forces Development Command were dispatched on Wednesday to evacuate stranded residents as the deluge submerged more than 400 homes across 114 villages.
Anek Panyatom, chief of the Thoeng District which is among the hardest hit by the storm, said the flash floods were caused by the swollen Ngao River bursting its banks.
He said: 'The water level is now receding. As for the damage to some houses, the Tap Tao Sub-district Administrative Organization is working quickly to assist affected residents. All the water is now flowing into the Mae Lao and Ing Rivers, and we're rushing to support those in low-lying areas.'
No injuries or deaths were reported as residents were warned to evacuate around three to five days in advance.
Typhoon Wipha lashed Thailand with heavy rains and fierce winds before being downgraded into a tropical depression.
However, the Thai Meteorological Department on Monday predicted more heavy rain and high seas until July 24. It added around half of Thailand will be battered with increased rainfall due to Wipha's remnants.
