AHMED AL-FARRA, HEAD OF THE PEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT AT NASSER HOSPITAL SPEAKING (Arabic) TO CAMERA KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JULY 28: Newborn babies in the Gaza Strip are fighting for survival amid Israel’s ongoing military offensive and blockade, with hospitals struggling to provide basic care due to severe shortages of infant formula and medicine. At Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, medical staff report infants developing rashes and swelling from extreme heat, as power shortages and damaged infrastructure leave facilities without proper ventilation or cooling. Gaza’s hunger crisis has escalated into a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe, with harrowing images showing severely emaciated residents collapsing from exhaustion and starvation. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 147 people, including 88 children, have died of starvation since October 2023. Israel, which has maintained a blockade on Gaza for 18 years, shut down all crossings on March 2, cutting off aid deliveries despite international appeals. Limited aid distribution resumed in late May through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, though access remains heavily restricted. Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s military campaign has killed nearly 60,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities. Ceasefire efforts have stalled as Israel continues its offensive. In November 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), brought by South Africa over its military actions in the enclave.
