Female driver accidentally crashes car into food shop after pickup truck hits her at intersection
This is the dramatic moment a female driver ploughed into a roadside shop after being struck by a pickup truck.
Thanyawan Chaijam, 38, was driving through an intersection when she was hit by a Nissan Navara at a level crossing in Pattaya.
CCTV footage shows the woman slowly entering the junction before the pickup hit the side of her car at around 5:28 pm local time on Tuesday.
Startled by the impact, Thanyawan tried to brake but accidentally pressed the accelerator instead in her confusion. Her vehicle hurtled into a roadside eatery, injuring two employees.
Police and rescue teams were alerted about the crash at 6:06 pm. They arrived at the scene and found the shop - a small stall made of corrugated iron sheets and wood - demolished.
Two wounded staff Boonpheng Phajuang, 59, and Rungruedee Sroisap, 14, were taken to a hospital.
The pickup driver, Sathit Mayong, 70, was unharmed and remained at the scene to give a statement. He claimed he was driving behind other cars and assumed no other drivers were entering the intersection.
A police spokesman said: 'We have obtained CCTV footage that clearly captured the moment of the crash. We will proceed with the case, ensuring fairness for all parties involved.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
