Storyline: Thai evacuees, forced to flee their homes in border areas near Cambodia, have pleaded for lasting peace following a ceasefire agreement between the two countries. The ceasefire took effect at midnight on Monday, following a special diplomatic meeting hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya. The talks brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, marking a critical step toward de-escalating recent border tensions that had forced many villagers to flee their homes. At a temporary resettlement site in Surin Province, Thai evacuees shared their anguish over the conflict and called for a permanent end to the hostilities. Despite the official ceasefire, skepticism remains among the evacuees, citing past broken promises. Others emphasized that people in Thailand are repulsed by the human cost of the clashes. On Tuesday, acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham confirmed that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border had "calmed down" following the implementation of the ceasefire. In response to reports of continued exchange of fire at the borders after the ceasefire, Phumtham said it could be caused by undisciplined Cambodian soldiers and that the Thai side has responded proportionately, adding that the situation "is calm now." It's not just us, it's them as well. When I see the situation, I feel bad for them too. Because we don't want to have problems. I don't know what to say, it's heartbreaking. That's all I can say. I want it to end quickly, because the villagers are having a hard time, and there are many things, many impacts. We can't work." Surin, Thailand - July 25, 2025: 6.
