Raging flood washes away homes in Thailand
Raging floods washed away homes as a river breached its banks in central Thailand.
Footage shows two wooden homes collapsing as roaring floodwaters surged through Sukhothai on Monday, July 28.
The overflowing Yom River had burst through sandbag barriers that were shoring up the river embankment, sending floods surging into nearby communities.
The floods had also eroded a 15 metre (50ft) stretch of road along the river.
Authorities said today the deluge has begun to ease, though some low-lying areas remained swamped. Residents were re-installing the broken sandbag barriers,
Sukhothai governor Nopparit Sirikosol said he has ordered relevant agencies to carry out relief operations and strengthen flood defences.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
