Phoenix, United States - July 29, 2025 07/29/2025 2:00 am GMT-0700 GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Crews were dispatched to the scene near Lower Buckeye Road and Citrus Road around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon after receiving reports that a worker was trapped following a trench collapse. Workers, officers, and firefighters began digging near the location of the collapse in an attempt to reach the trapped worker. According to the Goodyear Police Department, as crews removed dirt, more dirt began to collapse around them. Crews faced multiple hazardous obstacles during their initial rescue attempt, including gas lines, unstable ground, and sensitive infrastructure. As rescue efforts slowed and time passed, the decision was made to transition to a recovery operation. Firefighters from the cities of Goodyear, Avondale, and Phoenix, alongside APS utility crews, remained at the scene throughout Monday night and into Tuesday morning as recovery efforts unfolded. At approximately 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, crews were able to extract the body of the deceased worker successfully. The scene has been handed over to the Goodyear Police Department.
