SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 29: A tsunami warning was issued for parts of the U.S. West Coast, including San Francisco, following a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake struck at a depth of 20.7 kilometers (12.8 miles), about 119 kilometers (73.9 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The Russian Academy of Sciences stated it was the strongest earthquake in the region since 1952.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco Bay Area issued a tsunami advisory, urging residents to stay away from coastal areas. "This will NOT be a single wave. Do NOT try to go to the coast to take photos," the NWS warned on social media, emphasizing the dangers to both the public and emergency responders.
While San Francisco is under an advisory, communities further north face amore severe tsunami warning. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued alerts for parts of Russia, Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the tsunami warning for Hawaii, citing the "massive earthquake" in the Pacific. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as waves are expected to reach coastal regions.
