The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake struck at a depth of 20.7 kilometers (12.8 miles), about 119 kilometers (73.9 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The Russian Academy of Sciences stated it was the strongest earthquake in the region since 1952.
