BASRA, IRAQ - JULY 29 – 30: Hundreds of pilgrims who set out from southern Iraq trekked through the marshlands of Basra on Wednesday, July 30, joining millions of worshippers in the holy city of Karbala to mark Arbaeen—the 40th day of mourning for Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

The annual Arbaeen pilgrimage draws one of the largest public gatherings in the world, with devotees walking from various Iraqi cities, including Najaf, to the shrine of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas in Karbala.

This year in Iraq, crowds braved the journey through the southern Ahwar marshes, reflecting the deep spiritual significance of the observance.

Arbaeen falls on the 20th of Safar in the Islamic calendar, forty days after Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
