Terrifying moment rockfall of perilous mountain pass sends truck plummeting into gorge
On July 28, in the Bomi–Chayu–Chawalong section of Tibet’s Linzhi region, a tanker truck was suddenly struck by a massive rockfall while in motion. A huge boulder hit the vehicle, separating the tank from the cab and sending it plunging into a gorge. The scene was extremely perilous, but fortunately, the cab was not directly hit.
According to local traffic authorities and eyewitnesses, the driver narrowly escaped unharmed, and no other casualties were reported.
Following the incident, local authorities quickly initiated emergency repairs to restore traffic flow.
The Bomi–Chayu–Chawalong route is known as one of the shortest but most dangerous roads into Tibet, famous for its treacherous conditions and breathtaking scenery. The route crosses over 150 rockfall-prone zones and three snow-covered mountain passes at altitudes over 4,000 metres, posing a serious challenge for both drivers and vehicles.
Late July through September marks the rainy season for this route, during which landslides and falling rocks occur frequently.
