Chinese call centre gang jump from building to escape police
Suspected Chinese call centre scammers jumped from a building to escape a police raid in Thailand.
The suspects were working on their computers when officers stormed the luxury pool villa in Chiang Mai in July 29.
In their panic, several alleged fraudsters leapt from the second floor and plunged 30ft to the ground.
Eight were injured, including one who suffered a broken leg. They were taken to a hospital as police seized more than 20 computers and 100 mobile phones with Chinese SIM cards.
Police Major General Thawatchai Pongwiwatchai, deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 5, led the bust alongside Thailand's Action Taskforce for Information Technology Crime Suppression and Tourist Police.
He said: '‘All Chinese suspects entered Thailand and rented this house for around three months under a Chinese supervisor who rented the property to allow subordinates to work inside. The behaviour of this group was to work, eat, live, and sleep entirely within this luxurious house 24 hours a day.
‘Each of them received a wage of around 10,000 to 20,000 Chinese yuan, or approximately 50,000 to 100,000 baht monthly.
‘Their main goal was to deceive Chinese nationals in various ways, including online product scams, tricking them into transferring money to solve airline or bank problems, as well as extorting money through a call centre scam operation.
‘We are expanding the investigation to find the mastermind, as well as examining potential transnational networks, which are expected to have connections with a major cybercrime syndicate from abroad.'
