US: Thousands Mourn NYPD Officer Killed In Bronx Shooting At Hero’s Funeral
New York, United States - July 30, 2025 Under grey skies and heavy rain, thousands gathered in the Bronx to honor NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in the line of duty during a shooting on July 1. Islam, a three-and-a-half-year NYPD veteran, was laid to rest at Parkchester Jame Masjid, the heart of the Bangladeshi American community he proudly served. Officers from across the country and around the world stood at attention outside the mosque. Departments from as far as Dubai, Aurora, and Cicero were represented, alongside New York officers and those from nearby states. “It’s bittersweet,” said Officer Jennifer DeWitt from Waterbury, Connecticut. “It feels great to see this much support… but it’s also a terrible loss.” The funeral drew powerful voices. Governor Kathy Hochul quoted the Qur’an: “Whoever saves a life saves all of humanity.” Mayor Eric Adams called Islam “exemplary,” while Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch made an emotional announcement: “It is my honor and great privilege to promote Officer Didarul Islam to Detective First Grade.” Commissioner Tisch then presented Islam’s widow with his new shield. The promotion drew thunderous applause. A powerful show of unity followed. Streets filled with prayer rugs as mourners of all faiths—Muslim, Christian, and Jewish—prayed together. A four-helicopter flyby and a trumpet rendition of “Taps” marked the final farewell. Detective Islam’s casket was escorted to Laurel Grove Cemetery in New Jersey by a motorcade stretching nine blocks. A candlelight vigil is planned Friday outside the 47th Precinct.
