This is the spectacular moment a funnel cloud resembling a tornado was spotted spiraling skyward in China.

Footage shows the vertical cloud swirling above a building surrounded by mist and dimming sunlight in Songyuan, Jilin.

The vortex can be seen slowly dissipating, narrowing in the middle as it spins in the cloudy sky on July 16.

A funnel cloud is a rotating column of air that extends from a cloud but does not reach the ground, making it resemble a tornado without posing the same threat.

They form when warm, moist air rises and rotates due to changes in wind speed or direction.
