A concrete truck plunged from a hill and onto the roof of a coffee shop in Phuket.

The vehicle was delivering construction materials when the road collapsed as the driver was slowing down on July 31.

The 19-tonne mixer tumbled off the edge and landed on the roof of the Coffee in Farm cafe on the holiday island at 12:30 pm local time.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found the driver Patiphan Somrak, 50, trapped inside the mangled truck, which was also lodged in a damaged footpath after the fall.

Footage shows rescuers using specialist equipment to extract Patiphan from the overturned vehicle.

Medics attached a respirator to the injured man and took him to Vachira Phuket Hospital for treatment.

A crane was later deployed to tow away the truck.

The cafe owner said they will call the insurance company to claim compensation for the damages.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
