GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (RELEASED ON AUGUST 1, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT “SPANISH FOREIGN MINISTER JOSE MANUEL ALBARES” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY) - Spain announced on Friday that it had air-dropped 12 tonnes of humanitarian aid into Gaza, where UN-backed experts warn famine is taking hold due to Israel’s blockade.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said the mission deployed 24 parachutes, each carrying 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of food, providing supplies for approximately 11,000 people.

"The induced famine that the people of Gaza are suffering is a disgrace to all of humanity," Albares said in a video message posted on social media platform X, which included footage of the airdrop. He added that Spain also has aid ready to enter Gaza by road from Egypt.

Albares called on Israel to "open all land crossings permanently so that humanitarian aid can enter on a massive scale."

The Israeli military recently permitted foreign countries to conduct airdrops into Gaza. However, such operations have previously resulted in aid parcels falling on civilians, causing fatalities, or landing in the sea, prompting desperate residents to risk their lives retrieving them. The method has faced criticism for being inefficient compared to land deliveries.

Last week, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned that one-third of Gaza’s population has gone without food for days due to Israel’s siege. According to the WFP, one in four Palestinians in Gaza now faces famine-like conditions, with over 100,000 women and children suffering from acute malnutrition.

Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza for 18 years and, since March 2, has sealed all border crossings, severely restricting humanitarian aid and exacerbating the enclave’s already dire conditions. Palestinian authorities say at least 600 aid trucks per day are needed to meet the basic needs of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has carried out a relentless military offensive in Gaza, killing more than 60,300 Palestinians, according to local officials. The bombardment has caused widespread destruction and severe food shortages, pushing the territory toward famine.

International pressure continues to mount on Israel to allow unfettered humanitarian access as aid agencies warn of catastrophic hunger levels in Gaza.
