Three injured by falling rubble as van ploughs through multi-storey car park
Dramatic images show a van dangling from the first floor of a car park onto the street below after it smashed through a safety barrier.
Emergency services dashed to the NCP Markets car park on New York Street, in Leeds at 4.09pm on Thursday (30/7).
A grey Hyundai van had collided with a wall on the first floor. Three people were injured by falling rubble and were rushed to hospital.
West Yorkshire Police have said the occupants of the vehicle have been taken to the hospital for "precautionary checks"."
A significant police scene was established and damage to the building is being assessed by colleagues from the fire service and structural engineer.
Images show the van - which has its emergency lights on - wedged in the wall with its bonnet hanging over the road below.
Debris including bricks
and metal railing were also scattered across the ground.
At least five fire engines and four ambulances were in attendance at the crash site.
A passerby said: "I've not got a clue what happened, but I've never seen anything like this before - or so many ambulances."
Kane Rawdon, 31, was among those caught up in the incident after parking his vehicle inside the NCP Markets car park earlier today.
He said: "I was at work and got a text from a mate who knows I park here. I don't know if I'm going to be allowed through to get my car."
"I've not seen this many police before in town, but I'd heard something was happening. I hope that everyone is safe."
A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Ambulance resources responded to an incident at The Markets car park in central Leeds on Wednesday afternoon and five patients were conveyed to Leeds General Infirmary."
