Israeli bombardment severely damages ecological environment, health system: official
Storyline: The ongoing conflict in Gaza has created an unprecedented environmental catastrophe, with devastating impacts on biodiversity and public health, warned Nisreen Al Tamimi, Head of the Palestinian Environmental Quality Authority. According to Gaza's government media office, Israel has dropped more than 100,000 tons of explosives on the enclave. In an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) Arabic Channel, Tami underscored that the relentless strikes have polluted Gaza's air, soil and groundwater. "This war has brought great harm to mankind, nature and people. It affects the whole ecosystem, not only human beings, but also the whole ecosystem, including air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, farmland destruction, tree felling, sewage treatment system destruction and health system collapse. The effects of the war have spread to the whole ecosystem," said Tamimi. She emphasized that the environmental destruction has acute implications for Gaza's beleaguered population, as civilians crowded into limited spaces now face compounded dangers. "Gaza used to be a region rich in biodiversity, with some of the most important Palestinian animals and plants, but now it has become a serious health threat. It has become a gathering place for wastewater and hazardous waste. Restoring the ecosystem is crucial. Since the outbreak of the war, the Palestinians have submitted an application to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to study the environmental impact of the war on the Gaza Strip. UNEP responded immediately and prepared a preliminary report on the investigation of the impact of the war." The danger and damage to the environment caused by the war in Gaza will not be confined to this sector, but will cross national borders, and will have a long-term impact on biodiversity, civilization, global warming and climate change, she said.
