A terrifying scene unfolded during Monday morning rush hour on August 4, 2025, when a PATH train at Newport Station in Jersey City, New Jersey, caught fire—sending thick smoke through the train car and forcing passengers to flee in panic.

The dramatic video, filmed by Joseph Nikhil Reddy, shows a smoke-filled train car as distressed passengers pound on doors and yell for help. Moments later, the doors open and commuters scramble onto the platform, narrowly escaping the growing fire underneath the train.

Authorities say the fire started just after 6:19 a.m. beneath an eastbound PATH train. At least 13 passengers were treated for smoke inhalation, and nine were hospitalized for further evaluation.

The incident led to major service disruptions across the PATH network:

The Journal Square–33rd Street and Hoboken–World Trade Center lines were suspended.

The Hoboken–33rd Street route resumed shortly afterward.

Only the Newark–World Trade Center line remained fully operational during the emergency.

Emergency services responded quickly, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has launched a full investigation into the incident.
