Red-Light Camera Program Helps Cut Violations by 56 Percent
COLUMBIA, Md. — As part of National Stop on Red Week, the Howard County Police Department is urging drivers to stop for red lights and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
The department released a video showing several near misses from red-light violations across the county in the past year. Officials emphasized that running red lights not only puts lives at risk but is entirely preventable.
Howard County currently operates 29 red-light camera systems at 21 intersections. According to a 2023 analysis, violations at these monitored locations have dropped 56 percent since their initial installation. The initiative is part of the county’s broader effort to reduce traffic collisions and promote road safety.
