Poland will extend its temporary border control measures with Germany to October 4, according to Polish Interior and Administration Minister Marcin Kierwiński, Polish Press Agency reported on Sunday. The controls were originally set to expire on August 5, but an extension had been widely anticipated. Earlier this year, Germany tightened controls along its border with Poland, turning back undocumented migrants. Warsaw argues that this policy has unfairly increased the burden on Poland. In response, the Polish government introduced temporary border checks on July 7 along its western border with Germany and northeastern border with Lithuania. The measures were initially set for 30 days and aimed at curbing illegal migration. According to dpa German Press Agency, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that whether to lift Poland's border controls would depend on changes in Germany's border policy. Germany reintroduced border controls with Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Poland in October 2023. Since taking office in May this year, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has significantly tightened migration and border policies. In the first half of 2025, Germany deported over 11,800 people, an increase of more than 2,000 compared with the same period last year. Shotlist: Poland - Recent: 1.
