This is the shocking moment a Thai footballer attacked a referee who gave him a red card - then chased him across the pitch.

The hot-headed athlete exploded in rage at Siwakorn Sintana, who sent him off for allegedly kicking an opposing player during a tense football match on Sunday.

Footage shows player number 7 in a blue jersey storming over to the umpire before unleashing a right hook to his face.

Siwakorn was sent reeling as the man then chased him across the pitch, grabbing the back of his yellow shirt before other players intervened.

The alleged attack took place while both teams were tied 0-0 during the second half of the VIP Senior 35+ football tournament in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand.

Siwakorn sought treatment at a hospital before lodging a complaint at the Mae Chedi Police Station.

He posted a selfie showing his bruised face, writing online: 'Will I be able to come back? What will happen to my mental state?'

The Football Association of Thailand ordered Chaiyawat Kansutha, head of the refereeing department, to check on Siwakorn's condition.

However, the organisation said it is unable to issue a punishment for the offending footballer because the competition was not under its supervision.

The suspect was yet to apologise to Siwakorn. He has since deactivated his social media accounts.

Police said legal action against him was pending.
