Demonstrations were held across Pakistan to mark the second anniversary of Khan’s arrest. Over 200 people participating in the pro-Khan protests were taken into custody. Most of the arrests were made in Rawalpindi for “violating the protest ban,” while the rest took place in the city of Lahore. PTI spokesperson Zulfi Bukhari stated that police intervened to disperse the demonstrators. Former Prime Minister Khan was removed from office in 2022 after losing a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s parliament. He has been in prison since August 5, 2023, due to a number of cases ranging from corruption to supporting terrorism. Similar protests were reported in other cities, including Lahore, where police detained over 150 PTI activists in overnight raids and during demonstrations, according to security officials. PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari claimed more than 200 activists were arrested in Lahore alone. Khan, a former cricket star who became prime minister in 2018, was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in 2022 after losing support from Pakistan’s powerful military. His arrest in May 2023 triggered nationwide unrest, with protesters attacking military installations, leading to a severe crackdown on PTI. The ex-premier, currently serving a 14-year prison sentence in Rawalpindi on corruption charges, faces dozens of other cases, including allegations of terrorism and leaking state secrets. Khan denies all charges, calling them politically motivated. In a related development, Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) on Tuesday disqualified two senior PTI leaders—Omer Ayub Khan (National Assembly opposition leader) and Shibli Faraz (Senate opposition leader)—after a court sentenced them to 10 years in prison over attacks on military facilities during the 2023 protests. Seven other PTI lawmakers, including National Assembly parliamentary leader Zartaj Gul, were also stripped of their seats. The verdict stems from violent demonstrations following Khan’s brief arrest in May 2023, during which protesters vandalized military properties in Faisalabad and other cities. Late last month, hundreds of PTI members, including several lawmakers, were convicted on charges linked to the 2023 protests. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
