China: Shanghai tourism stacks higher as LEGOLAND joins theme park lineup
[Voiceover] Where is the best place for summer fun? Sweaty sightseeing or…rollercoaster therapy? This summer, Shanghai’s theme parks are the place to be. [Soundbite] Tourist: "My brother is a big fan of Lego so we come to this park in Shanghai." (Reporter: "What's your favorite ride Today?") "Probably the dragon ride thing." [Voiceover] In theme parks, the soundtrack is simple: screaming, chewing… and (cha-ching sound). Because fun isn’t free. But those pricey snacks? Just a tiny piece of the pie. Last year, Shanghai smashed records: 390 million domestic visitors, 6.7 million international tourists, and a staggering 576 billion yuan in tourism revenue. [Soundbite] Olivia He, Reporter: "So tell us how crazy business has been since opening." [Soundbite] Christopher Sacco, Head of Operations, Legoland Shanghai Resort: "Yeah, it's been really exciting since we opened on July 5th. We've had people visiting from all over China, and it's been so busy, and the kids have been so happy and excited. It's been awesome. Our parks are designed for families with children aged 2 to 12. So we have rides and attractions that are really built specifically for them. But some of our bestsellers are the popcorn bucket, and Ollie the Dragon -- he comes in a plush toy, also key chain. He's doing really well. And you can build your own mini figure in the stores. You can customize all the pieces. So those are doing really well." [Voiceover] Shanghai’s not just riding the wave—it’s building it. Four major international theme parks are now calling the city home: the brand-new Legoland, ever-popular Disney Resort, a Harry Potter makeover for Joypolis, and the upcoming Peppa Pig World. It's all part of Shanghai's big bet on theme parks as its next economic powerhouse. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
