Passengers panic as power bank explodes on train in Taiwan
Passengers panicked when a power bank exploded on a train in Taiwan.
Footage shows a smoke-filled carriage with commuters still on board, some of whom were seen moving away from the front of the coach on Wednesday, August 6.
Officials said the Taiwan Railways Corporation (TRA) No. 125 Ziqiang Express was travelling between Luzhu Station and Xinzuoying Station in Kaohsiung at around 5:40 pm when a fire broke out in carriage 7.
The blaze was reportedly caused by a power bank that caught fire while being carried by a passenger.
Upon hearing the explosion and seeing the flames, the train conductor quickly used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze.
The traveller carrying the charging device is said to have suffered burns to one hand.
One witness said: 'Everyone is safe at the moment, but it caused panic, which was really terrifying.'
No damage was caused to train equipment, and no other services were affected.
Train operators continue to monitor onboard safety and remind commuters to handle electronic devices with care.
Power bank explosions can occur due to overheating, manufacturing defects, overcharging, physical damage, or the use of low-quality devices. In rare cases, lithium-ion batteries can enter thermal runaway - a chemical reaction that causes the battery to overheat and catch fire.
