Locals collect wood washed away by floods in northern India
Residents gathered logs and debris swept downstream by recent floods in northern India.
Footage shows locals standing along the waterside of a fast-flowing river in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, using bamboo poles to retrieve floating timber on August 6.
Some villagers were seen loading the collected wood into three-wheeled vehicles, likely to transport it back to their homes.
The salvaged wood is expected to be used for various purposes, including firewood, construction materials, or sold for extra income, as communities begin to recover from the flood damage.
Uttarakhand has been battered by heavy rainfall over the past few days. A cloudburst rainstorm in the village of Dharali on Tuesday caused devastating flooding.
The disaster struck around 1:30 pm local time when the Kheerganga River suddenly swelled, sending torrents of muddy water cascading down the hills and inundating the area.
Local media reported that at least five people have been confirmed dead, while more than 100 others remain missing. Many of them are feared dead, entombed in the layers of thick mud and debris.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that around 190 people have been rescued so far from the affected region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall and flash flood risks until August 10, raising concerns over further landslides in the Himalayan region.
Authorities are urging both residents and tourists to stay away from rivers, unstable slopes, and damaged infrastructure until conditions improve.
Uttarakhand, which is found in the Himalayas, is prone to flash floods and landslides. Some environmental experts blame them on the theory of climate change.
In 2023, at least 30 people died after heavy rain triggered floods and landslides in the area.
