Lifeboat crews battle through choppy sea during Storm Floris
Crew from the Oban Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in Scotland battled through choppy seas during Storm Floris to rescue a stranded yacht.
The emergency team was called out just before 8:45 am on Monday, August 4, after a vessel dragged its anchor and ran aground in Oban Bay, northeast of Kerrera Marina.
The volunteer crew launched the Shannon-class lifeboat The Campbell-Watson (13-50) and quickly reached the scene near the entrance of the bay.
A marina staff member had spoken with the yacht's owner, who chose to remain on board and wait for the rising tide to lift the boat.
While assisting at the scene, the crew received a second emergency call from another yacht whose skipper also reported that their anchor had dragged in the stormy conditions, raising concerns about their position.
The skipper initially requested to board the lifeboat for safety, but later returned to the yacht after adjusting the mooring.
Once satisfied that their vessel was secure, they declined further assistance.
Storm Floris brought winds of up to 90 mph, causing widespread disruption across parts of the UK. The Met Office described it as 'an unusually strong storm for the time of year'.
The RNLI saves lives at sea through its 24-hour search and rescue services around the UK and Ireland. With 238 lifeboat stations and over 240 lifeguard units across the UK and the Channel Islands, its volunteers are dedicated to maritime safety.
